    Join the NCCPE team as our Communications Lead

    The National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) is looking for an experienced communications professional to lead on our communications strategy and activities, and to play a critical role in building our reputation as a change agent in the higher education sector.

     

    Grade G - £35,333 to £42,155 per annum. Part-time working 22.5 hours per week, fixed Term for 2 years.
    Bristol based – we work flexibly (hybrid) but the successful candidate will need to be able to travel to Bristol when necessary.

    The successful candidate will shape our strategy and delivery plans, oversee all our communication channels, develop and curate content to showcase the Centre’s work, and support the NCCPE directors and team to maximise the impact of our work.

    This part-time role will enable you to make the most of your communications skills and experience, to further shape and enhance the NCCPE’s reputation and brand as a national centre of expertise in public engagement.

    Life recently upgraded our much-loved planetarium with a new state of the art Digistar 7 system that engages and inspires visitors with space and astronomy content.  We are looking to recruit a creative and imaginative person to be our Digital Producer to lead on the creation of the planetarium programme and other digital content in the Science Centre’s Space Zone. You will work with and train teams across the Science Centre to ensure Life offers a creative and unique space experience for visitors. 

     

    The successful candidate will be a great communicator and confident team player. You will be creative and imaginative, with the ability and experience to produce excellent visual and digital stories and content. Prior experience of operating a planetarium is desirable. Full training will be given.

    Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement is looking to recruit a full time Explainer to join our Engagement Team, to engage visitors with the science and heritage of this internationally significant site, providing answers to their questions, introducing them to exhibits and describing Jodrell Bank’s science, engineering and heritage in a friendly, efficient and informative way. This is a public-facing role, although it will also sometimes include elements of organising and supporting other activities in the Centre such as festivals and other events. Ideal candidates should be knowledgeable and passionate about science and astronomy, with the ability to instil that passion in others.

    Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement is one of The University of Manchester’s Cultural Institutions and offers opportunities for visitors to engage with the science, heritage and culture of Jodrell Bank through a year-round visitor experience via our exhibitions, grounds, events and festivals. We were established in 2011 and typically welcome around 160,000 annual visitors per year.     The Role:

    The STEM programme is delivered through practical hands on workshops, family events and teacher training within four key themes: Aerospace, Green Energy, Environmental

    Science, and Sustainable Design, these themes make the most of the existing expertise in the wider Prince’s Foundation, as well as the local STEM employment opportunities and expertise.

    Due to themes and existing expertise on the estate a candidate with a background in physics, engineering or digital technologies would be at an advantage. The candidate should however be comfortable teaching STEM subjects out with their area of expertise to a primary and secondary school level, with support from the wider Education team and industry experts.

    The wider education programme on Dumfries House Estate is delivered across themes including: STEM; Food, Farming and Horticulture; Outdoor Activity; Hospitality; Textiles and Building Crafts. Due to the holistic nature of the programme, the post holder will be required to assist in these areas from time to time, take part in CPD in these areas and work with colleagues across the education team on cross curricular education projects.

    The post holder will assist in the development and implementation of workshops, industry training programmes, short courses and project related education activity including large scale events and cross curricular delivery. The post holder will also prepare and deliver classes across a range of ages as well as maintaining stakeholder relationships with industry and education partners.

     

    Key Tasks

    Specific Duties will include:

    Supporting the Education Director and Curriculum Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of the Prince’s Foundation’s education strategy and core STEM programmes, a responsibility which will include:

    • Designing, supporting and delivering STEM workshops activities to a primary and secondary audience in line with The Curriculum For Excellence, Learning for Sustainability, STEM education strategy and the Principles of Harmony.
    • Participate in evaluation and review of workshops and education activities in a timely manner and contribute to education reports for directors, partners and funders.
    • Ensure education activities are suitable for learners by writing, reviewing, updating and following risk assessments, as well as following health and safety procedures for first aid and incident reporting.
    • Keeping up to date with current practices and policies in STEM education, through networking, CPD and personal development.
    • Supporting the development of strong relationships with industry and education partners such as STEM industry funders and partners, STEM Education organisations and charities and local authority and Scottish Education representatives. Work with these partners to enhance the STEM offer at Dumfries House through co delivery and design of workshops and activities.
    • Preparing, and maintaining equipment and facilities to a high standard prior to and following education activity, monitor and request stock as appropriate.
    • Further the wider education work of The Prince’s Foundation through contribution to team meetings, joint education activity and events and cross curricular CPD sessions
    • Support the STEM manager to ensure that the maintenance of the STEM building(s) is completed, informing relevant Prince’s Foundation staff when maintenance is required.
    • Maintain familiarity with The Prince’s Foundation handbook and relevant HR procedures.
    • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required of you in the post.

     

    It is in the nature of the work of the Prince's Foundation that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff are therefore expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises that tasks which are not specifically covered in their Job Description must be undertaken.

     

    Person Specification

    The essential skills, knowledge and experience required are:

    • The successful candidate should have recent and relevant STEM industry or STEM education experience or be educated to degree level in a relevant STEM subject.
    • The post holder should be able to demonstrate prior experience educating and engaging with young people or community groups through STEM activities.
    • Able to develop and implement STEM learning resources linked into curriculum themes.
    • Able to represent the Prince’s Foundation professionally at all times.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; planning, setting agendas, coordinating/conducting meetings, events, and workshops.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
    • Strong organisation skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

    Desirable skills, knowledge and experience required are:

    • Knowledge of the future UK wide STEM skills shortage, growth industries and how this impacts employers and future employees.

    • Awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and how these relate to industry and education.

     

    Other:

    • The post will be based at Dumfries House, Cumnock Ayrshire with the requirement to travel on occasion. A driving license is required for this post;
    • This post is based on a full time 37.5 hours per week linked to the target audience needs. Job share and/or flexible working may be considered for suitable candidates.

In 2019 we made our sector’s first climate emergency declaration and embarked on radical decarbonisation of our estate and operations. The Sustainable Futures department is a small team that receives big support from the rest of the organisation. The work to improve our own sustainability is mirrored by environmental content in activities for our audiences and is shared with our partners to promote decarbonisation across the sector.

    The Sustainability Coordinator will play a key role in building the foundations upon which We The Curious’ sustainability ambitions are built. You will research best practice in sustainability, help to shape and deliver projects that reduce the organisation’s environmental impact, and support other departments in making their practices more sustainable. A major focus of the role will be working with the Head of Sustainable Futures and Carbon Manager to drive decarbonisation across the organisation on the way to carbon net zero.     Green Man Festival wishes to appoint a manager for their Einstein’s Garden science engagement area. 

    Einstein’s Garden makes and curates creative fusions of science, art and nature. We bring together scientists, arts practitioners and diverse audiences to create playful and inspiring encounters. The area’s venues are packed with a vibrant programme of performances, workshops and installations that use art, creativity and entertainment to engage people with the diverse aspects of science and nature in fun, quirky and unexpected ways. 

    The Einstein’s Garden Manager is responsible for curating and producing innovative and entertaining science engagement projects, booking and programming entertainment, workshops and science stalls. They are responsible for the planning, management and coordination of the area, liaison with artists, and recruitment and management of crew and volunteers. The area should appeal to adults, young people and children. 

    This role will suit an event producer who engages with audiences in an impactful and memorable way, with an interest in festivals, science (particularly in relation to health and environmental issues), arts and culture.  The successful candidate will be confident and personable, have excellent communication skills, a logical operational attitude and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of people and key stakeholders.

    Contract Details

    • Part time contract

    • Salary - £3,500 fixed fee

    • Majority of the contract is remote working, but the successful candidate will be required to work on-site during the festival.

    The Science Behind… 

    Dacorum Heritage is looking for an experienced scientist who has confidence in showing  experiments in front of the camera. 

    About Us 

    Dacorum Heritage is unlike any other museum, as it currently operates from a museum  store. There is no dedicated open gallery space, so staff and volunteers must think creatively  when engaging local communities with local history.  

    With a collection of over 130,000 artefacts in store we cover a wide range of themes and  time periods. From the Neolithic, through to the present day, the collection gives a  wonderful insight into the long history and culture of the Dacorum area. Some of the ways  in which the museum engage with the public are through loan boxes, workshops, temporary  exhibitions and volunteering opportunities.  

    The Project: 

    Dacorum Heritage holds collections relating to industries and people across the Borough of  Dacorum. Within this collection we keep stories from our local heritage which holds great potential  for teachers delivering their science curriculum. This project, funded by the Royal Society, will pilot  the use of the collection to engage audiences with science topics, in this case, inspired by Brock’s  Fireworks, a well-known fireworks manufacturer once based in Hemel Hempstead. The outcomes,  including a new loan box inspired by Brock’s, will be developed in consultation with local schools.  

    Following this pilot, we would then like to follow this loan box with a second loan box theme. This  box would be called ‘The Science behind photography’ and would be based on the strong heritage  links we have to Kodak. Taking what we have learnt from the first and then applying it to another  box. 

    Expected Outcomes: 

    At least two sessions lasting no longer than 1 hr filmed, by the museum, showing  experiments inspired by the two historic themes. The first being Fireworks and the second  being Photography. 

    Brainstorm with museum staff and volunteers ideas for what could be included in the box,  alongside the edited films. 

    Person Specification 

    Committed and passionate about science and bringing it to life in a fun and creative way. Experience of delivering science to young people. Ideally to primary school aged children or  early secondary aged children. 

    Experience of developing sessions that respond to various learning styles and abilities  Ability to communicate effectively with DH and children both verbally and in writing  Confidence in speaking and being the host in front of the camera. 

    Timetable 

    2 days work over the course of one month.  

    ½ day with DH discussion of about what will be filmed– Feb 2023 

    1 day filming of experiments – Feb 2023

    The postholder will be responsible for delivering Centre of the Cell’s Youth Membership Scheme, as well as delivering our science shows and workshops. Responsibilities also include developing new learning activities and working on various public engagement projects with researchers in other university teams.

    Candidates must have relevant experience working in informal science learning, in a public facing role, and in developing educational resources. You must also have experience managing projects, be able to organise a varied workload, and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of organisations, groups and individuals. Excellent presentation and communications skills are essential. Candidates must be willing to be flexible on hours of work on a regular basis.

    Centre Manager, Centre of the Cell

    About Us

    Centre of the Cell is an informal biomedical science learning centre, based in the Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London.

    Opened in 2009, it is the first science education centre in the world to be located within working biomedical research laboratories and provides our visitors the opportunity to learn about the amazing world of cells, the human body and the latest medical research.

    With its two iconic learning spaces, the award-winning Centre of the Cell aims to inspire young people with an immersive digital interactive experience in STEMPod and through engaging science shows and workshops in Neuron Pod. We also deliver outreach programmes and events in schools and community areas.

    Many of our activities are funded by the public engagement components of research grants. These activities include Centre of the Cell’s Youth Membership Scheme, that now has over 400 members, summer schools, volunteering and work experience opportunities, mentoring, help with university applications and co-production of the Big Question Lecture series.

    The Role

    This is an exciting time for Centre of the Cell. STEMPod is currently undergoing a £438,000 refurbishment which will provide the space with state-of-the-art computer and film technology and a refresh of activities and film to reflect the latest in biomedical research at Queen Mary University of London. There is also funding secured for a series of new interactives, shows and workshops to be developed and delivered in 2023-24.

    To support the next stages of our development plans, we are looking to appoint a Centre Manager for Centre of the Cell.

    This critical role will provide you with the opportunity to manage the full operational delivery of Centre of the Cell, including managing a small team of delivery staff, overseeing public engagement projects, and day to day finance, HR, and infrastructure tasks.

    This role will also allow you to work closely with the Director and Founder of Centre of the Cell, by contributing to, developing, and implementing strategic plans to support the long-term future of Centre of the Cell and its offerings to the public.

    About You

    Due to the current requirements of the role, on this occasion we are only looking for an individual who has a background in working in a similar environment to ours (e.g museums, visitor attraction, heritage/science centres)

    The post is based, onsite, at the Whitechapel Campus in London. It is full time, permanent appointment. The starting salary will be Grade 5, in the range of £40,386 - £47,414 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
