    • Catalyst Science Discovery Centre (a registered charity) is the only science discovery centre in the UK with chemistry and STEM as its main theme. It has an extensive educational programme for schools and the general public, and offers activities for a wide range of ages from infants up to adult learners. 

      This is an exciting opportunity to join the team, working with the Education Manager to help deliver and develop Catalyst’s educational activities to schools, groups and the general public and to assist with administration within the education department. You will have the responsibility for the development of material for use with school students at KS4 (and occasionally above). 

       

      Essential attributes:

      • Science Degree or equivalent qualification building from chemistry A Level
      • Enthusiasm for science and science communication
    • ·         Excellent communication skills to suit a variety of audiences
    • ·         Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team

    ·         Ability to contribute to the writing of shows and workshops for school and public groups

    • Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes, Cheshire is looking to appoint a suitably qualified Science Presenter to deliver the award winning Education Programme to families and groups visiting the Science Centre at the weekends. The role will involve delivering hands-on science workshops and shows, performing scientific and chemical demonstrations to the public and enthusing children and adults about science. The successful candidate will have:


    • the ability to present information in a confident and enthusiastic way
    • excellent communication skills
    • the ability to work with people of all ages. 
    • a strong interest in science, including a minimum of an A-Level in Science (Chemistry, Biology or Physics) 
    • on appointment you will need to apply for a  DBS check as you will be working with children and their families. 

    The job will usually involve working at Catalyst for 1 weekend in every 3, although flexibility will occasionally be required to cover special events and holidays. Pay: Hourly rate - national minimum wage.

    BIA is the award-winning trade association for bioscience in the UK. The position of Communications Executive is a key role in the organisation, representing an innovative sector seen as key to the future success of the UK in delivering new treatments for patients and economic growth.

    The primary purpose of the Communications Executive role is to support and implement the BIA’s communications plan and activity, including social media activity, content management of the BIA website, managing the blog schedule, managing the weekly publication of Newscast, providing input to BIA publications and projects and supporting BIA events and conferences through communications support. This role is pivotal to supporting the BIA’s strategic objective of communicating the value and nature of this exciting sector to media and external stakeholders.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    The duties and responsibilities of this role include the following:

     

    Media relations:

     

    Support the handling of incoming media enquiries and help to coordinate BIA response

    Support the drafting and development of press releases

    Responsible for updating media database and lead person in team re knowledge of how distribution system works (Dotmailer/Gorkana) and training colleagues on how these works

    Daily monitoring of key media sources to inform a daily round-up email (by 10am each day) that flags BIA press coverage, key stories of interest, key member news, and news about targets and prospects to inform membership approaches by BDMS team

    Communications:

     

    Editor of weekly Newscast blog to members and wider stakeholders; including drafting CEO update and supporting the co-ordination of other content

    Manage BIA blog schedule; lead schedule, manage input, communicate blog policy and also author  BIA content where appropriate

    Lead BIA social media activity and monitoring. Promote the BIA’s work through Twitter and LinkedIn. Be an internal champion for social media,  looking for ways to build on BIA and staff activity in this area

    Work with other colleagues to ensure data-sets are updated on mailing list including managing bounce backs

    Support content management on BIA website, particularly in relation to reports and releases; support website review project

    Lead monthly and quarterly comms stats reviews

    Support the work of BIA Advisory Committees as advised, including the Communications Forum

    Projects:

     

    Support the development and execution of key BIA projects including the BIA finance reports, BIA MAC LeaP Programme and promoting our charity of the year

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

     

    Desirable:

     

    Academic background and/or previous work experience in life sciences, healthcare or policy

    Experience of working across all communications disciplines including media relations, website content development and social media

    Essential:

    The Cheltenham Science Festival welcomes around 60,000 visitors over a 6-day period in June every year. We are looking for a full-time Schools and Family Programme Manager with a track record of developing events and experiences for children and young people and an enthusiasm for creating and seeking out new formats and techniques to engage these audiences with science.

    The postholder will be responsible for events, workshops, interactive exhibits and free activities around the festival site and town.

    The Role

    The STEM NOW team based at WSC run the South Central STEM Ambassador Hub on behalf of STEM Learning UK. Through coordinating more than 4,000 volunteers, the STEM NOW team are dedicated to inspiring young people to consider STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and open up the many opportunities available to them in STEM industries and careers.

    The team are now looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to help deliver this mission in the role of STEM Ambassador Liaison Officer. The post-holder will work remotely term-time only focusing on the areas of West Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire.

    The STEM Ambassador Liaison Office role has four key strands.

    ·         To support the STEM Engagement Manager in delivering the STEM Learning Ambassador Programme contract requirements. This involves working directly with schools, colleges and community groups in West Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire to ensure that STEM Ambassadors in this region are effectively mobilised to enrich and enhance the STEM curriculum.

    ·         The focus for this role is to develop effective relationships with schoolteachers, careers advisors and club leaders to encourage and facilitate effective partnerships between schools and local STEM Ambassadors and STEM employers. The post holder will be driven to meet targets related to engagement.

    ·         To deliver training packages to STEM Ambassadors to ensure they are fully equipped to work with young people and encourage a diverse range of STEM Ambassador activities.

    ·         To build regional relationships, and work closely with strategic partners with the support of the STEM Engagement Manager.

    Flexibility is essential as Winchester Science Centre relies on a small team of dedicated individuals working closely together to support and develop the charity, so occasional additional support duties will be required in other areas of its business.

    Job Description

    Key responsibilities:

    ·         Enable STEM teachers and leaders from state schools and youth groups to have access to an extensive STEM volunteer cohort, by raising awareness for WSC and the STEM Learning networking, support activities and building key relationships.

    ·         Proactively contact STEM teachers and leaders in selected schools, to ensure these schools engage effectively with the STEM Ambassador Programme. Identify engagement levels and school needs and suggest deliverable activities that would meet these needs.

    ·         Organise and facilitate a select number of local network meetings between teachers and STEM Ambassadors, in order to share best practice and organise STEM activities effectively.

    ·         Organise, facilitate and deliver STEM events for schools, youth groups and STEM Ambassadors to enable continued engagement, and demonstrate best practice.

    ·         Manage relationships with STEM employers and identify new opportunities with the sector, especially in supporting particular local school networks. This will also involve promoting the programme to some STEM employers and groups of STEM Ambassadors

    ·         Deliver STEM Ambassador training when required within your area.

    ·         Where appropriate, develop and maintain effective relationships with other STEM enrichment organisations such as universities, charities, museums and advisor networks to support and promote the programme.

    ·         Proactively work with the STEM team at Winchester Science Centre to develop and improve the support we provide to local schools and STEM Ambassadors.

    ·         Work with the STEM Administration team to ensure all schools, groups, and ambassador activity details are logged on the STEM Ambassador database.

    ·         Develop methods of promoting the scheme to schools and youth groups including:

    ·         Collating and circulating information about STEM schemes in a regular newsletter, with the support of the STEM Engagement Manager

    ·         Attending relevant local network meetings and conferences to promote awareness and publicise events.

    ·         Work with the administration team to ensure web content/ social media is up to date.

    Reporting and communication within the team

    ·         Ensure that work is effectively recorded and reported, including reporting status against targets so that work can be reprioritised as necessary.

    ·         Ensure that requests for volunteer support from schools are communicated efficiently.

    ·         Liaise with teachers to confirm arrangements and support particular requests.

    ·         To contribute to the contractual termly reviews and reports.

    ·         Occasional evening and weekend work will be required and the post-holder will be expected to travel across West Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, and attend a biweekly meeting at Winchester Science Centre.

    It is essential that the post-holder holds a valid driving license and has access to a car as they will need to frequently attend meetings across West Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. A mileage allowance is paid monthly.

    About the Role


    The internship offers the chance to assist in the delivery and development of engaging and inspiring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities to the 10 – 15 age group and have an influence on the wider uptake of STEM subjects by school pupils.


    Responsibilities include, supporting the planning and delivery of STEM workshops, facilitating STEM engagement events, developing internal and external relationships to inform, develop and support the delivery of the My Wow Live programme.


    The role also includes researching local and national STEM initiatives to identify collaborative working opportunities and support the development of new workshops.


    About You


    You’ll be educated to degree level (SCQF level 9) in a STEM subject.  You’ll be a team player who is self-motivated and can work on your own initiative with a desire and enthusiasm to inspire young people to consider a career in STEM.


    Ideally, you’ll have previous experience delivering group work to young people and will be able to demonstrate your innovation and creativity to ensure the sessions are insightful and fun.


    You’ll also have good organisational skills with the ability to multi-task while working in partnership with both internal and external partners. Good communication skills are essential for this role and you must have the confidence to present and engage young people in a group situation.
