    The Role

    As the Head of Engineering, Communication & Marketing Services, you will ensure that engineering remains at the heart of everything we do. 

    Joining an established team, you will work closely with our CEO, business units and Technical Strategy Board, as well as member groups to build our influence and credibility in the engineering and educational sector. You will deliver compelling, evidence-based policy and member engagement programmes that benefit the professional engineering community. 

    You will take ownership of the brand as well as all communications channels, including Professional Engineering (PE) Magazine, our website and social media, as well as public affairs and media relations, making this the great opportunity in which to make a real impact. 

    Some of your duties will include: 

    - Acting as a spokesperson for the Institution on engineering issues 
    - Establishing a transparent engagement framework to grow our committed and diverse volunteer base 
    - Managing our brand, including the promotion of the Institution, our membership and position as a subject matter expert  
    - Developing and delivering the digital marketing strategy
    - Managing our flagship publication – Professional Engineer, as well as sourcing commercial partnership opportunities

    About You 

    To be considered as the Head of Engineering, Communication & Marketing Services, you will need: 

    - A degree (or equivalent) in engineering
    - To be a registered professional engineer (or have significant similar experience)
    - An understanding of the professional engineering agenda
    - Significant experience in brand management and marketing communications 
    - Experience of using customer research and data-driven user insights to develop new marketing and communication services and improve existing services
    - Proven experience of completing significant and large-scale projects to time, cost, and quality
    - Excellent people and relationship management skills with the ability to influence, advice, manage and coach others
    - Strong IT skills
    - To be an innovative self-starter with excellent problem-solving abilities

    • Project Support Coordinator: Young Stem Leader Programme (YSLP)

      Fixed term contract of 24 months, 35 hours per week with possibility of extension

      The postholder will be based in our SSERC headquarters in Dunfermline. As a result of the current pandemic the successful applicant may undertake a significant amount of work from home.  This will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

      About the role

      The post holder will support all key aspects of programme development, delivery and quality assurance with the appropriate level of support from the Project Manager and Project Officer.

      The role will include:

    • ·        Administration of the registration, training and certification procedures for new Tutor Assessors and their respective centres
    • ·        Maintaining accurate, high quality records and data for all key aspects of YSLP
    • ·        Administration of verification and award certification process for YSLs in line with SSERC’s Quality Assurance Policy and Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) requirements
    • ·        Tracking and meeting programme deadlines and key deliverables in line with the work plan and team calendar set out by the Project Manager
    • ·        Supporting YSLP delivering centres with enquiries through the YSLP inbox, linking communications and enquiries to the relevant people

    About the role

    Calling all Science presenters! Here at the Royal Institution (Ri), we are growing our team of school presenters and are looking for freelancers to join our team. The Ri team of professional presenters have an infectious enthusiasm and love for science that inspires audiences, entertaining and educating in equal measure. 

    We are looking for presenters who can deliver engaging science shows to children in primary and secondary schools across the UK, and who are confident in sharing their knowledge with teachers and school staff.  

    If successful, you will be delivering our successful science shows and professional development training sessions in schools across the country. We will provide you with the scripts, the props, the training, and the bookings… all you need to focus on is delivering amazing shows that engage and enthral our audiences with the wonders of science. We are particularly looking for presenters who can work in the Midlands and Northern regions of the UK.  

     A typical day as a Royal Institution Science in Schools presenter would involve driving to the school, setting up and delivering two one-hour long student shows, an hour long CPD training session for school staff, and then ending your day with a 45 minute after school show for families.  

    The amount of work is varied, so flexibility is key. We estimate that successful applicants will be booked in for 8 school visits per month, with more bookings in the months of March and September. The rate of pay is £190 per day (plus travel) for presenting and £100 per day while completing your training.  

    Please note that this role includes the use of pyrotechnics and other potentially hazardous materials. Full training will be given, and the successful candidates will be required to adhere to all Ri risk assessments and health and safety guidelines.  

     We are looking for candidates who: 

    • Have experience in presenting to children and adults 
    • Are skilled communicators  
    • Have the knowledge and confidence to deliver science shows 
    • Can act as an ambassador for the Royal Institution  
    • Have experience of handling chemicals and/or pyrotechnics, or are willing to learn  
    • Can manage their own admin and record keeping, and work with us to ensure we maximise the number of schools who can access our shows 
    • Are committed to exciting shows that keep everyone’s Health and Safety front and centre 

     You will also need:

    • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle 
    • To be available on these dates 
      • 9 or 10 February for remote interview 
      • 22 to 26 Feb and 1 to 3 March (inclusive) for training (£100 per day)

As someone with a passion for learning, making and tinkering you will lead Life’s Making Studios, developing and facilitating imaginative and innovative making activities for science centre visitors and school groups.     Duties will also include supervising the day-to-day running, cleanliness and good order of the Making Studios, including materials and equipment.

     

    Applicants must be able to work flexible hours as the science centre is open 7 days a week and it is essential the Making Studios are managed during peak times, weekends and occasional evening events.     Our Science and Technology Associates support the Research, Design and Build Team in high impact venture creation. The Science and Technology Associate works closely with the Head of Science and Technology, as part of the Research Design & Build (RDB) team. The RDB team includes both technical and commercial experts who work together to explore major challenges, gaps and opportunities in the ‘alternative protein’ and ‘alternative material’ industries.
