Phd Student Internships, The Royal Institution

17 Jan 2025 12:35 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

For 225 years The Royal Institution (Ri) has been dedicated to creating opportunities for people to engage with science. Our public and education programmes reach people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and worldwide, with an array of opportunities for individuals to engage with and explore a variety of science topics and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

We are now looking for 3 Phd students to join our Digital (x1) and Masterclass (x2) teams for a three-month internship to gain experience in science communication and engagement, and education outreach. These internships are available between Feb to September 2025, for exact dates please see attached job descriptions.

The Masterclass internship is an exciting opportunity to support our renowned Masterclass Programme. You will be able to use and develop a range of science communication skills by developing workshops and accessible resources, training young people to create and deliver their own Masterclasses, and support the running and evaluation of the programme across the UK.

Our third internship is with the Digital team and will help support the Ri’s digital content production and platforms. We are a small and creative digital team and work collaboratively with our internal partners. You do not need any formal experience, however, an interest in learning more about digital media and discovering its’ potential for communicating science to diverse and global audiences, would be preferable.

For more detailed information on any of these internships please visit our website here:  Work with us | Royal Institution

To apply, please send a current CV to recruitment@ri.ac.uk by 9am 28 January 2025 with a supporting statement, no more than 500 words, explaining why you are interested in the internship and why we should consider you for the placement.

Please note, the Ri offers placements for students who are enrolled on a research degree under the Doctoral Training Partnership programme funded by Research Councils including the BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC, AHRC and NERC. These opportunities are only open to PhD students who are eligible for a stipend via their DTP/University/research council in order to undertake a three month professional internship. Students should check with their university that they are able to secure funding before applying. They will need to obtain the grant holder’s written permission to undertake the placement, outlining any funding arrangements, before a position can be offered.

All roles are based in Central London, with a mix of home and office working; students will be expected to base themselves within or near to London for the period of the placement.
