The Royal Institution are looking for x2 Phd students to join our Family Programme and Science in Schools team for a three-month internship to gain experience in science communication and engagement. These internships will run concurrently from June to September 2023, for exact dates please see attached job descriptions.
The Family Programme is core to how we, at the Ri, engage the general public with science. Based mostly at our offices in central London, this internship will consist of theatre talks, interactive workshops and hands-on open days. Your main role will be to assist the Family Programmes Manager in the delivery of this programme, helping deliver workshops, developing hands-on activities for science activities and creating short science videos for YouTube and TikTok.
The Royal Institution’s (Ri) ‘Science in Schools’ programme offers a unique package of science shows for students, Continuing Professional Development for teachers, and community science shows for families. We are the largest national provider of science shows delivered in schools in the UK, and in 2022, 76% of our shows were delivered to schools in the most deprived areas of the UK, free of charge.
As part of the Ri Schools team, a wide range of science communication projects will be available to the Science Engagement Intern. Specific duties may include:
• Assessment of applications for the annual schools grant scheme
• Content development, event management, workshop delivery, discussion groups and speaker liaison opportunities for the Annual Youth Summit.
• Content development for Science in Schools science shows: collaboration with internal Ri team on training and demonstration of the building of science kits.
These placements are ideal for anyone interested in science education, education outreach, working with young people, and science communication. There is no need to have any prior experience in science communication or working with young people.

Please note, the Ri offers placements for students who are enrolled on a research degree under the Doctoral Training Partnership programme funded by Research Councils including the BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, AHRC and NERC. These opportunities are only open to PhD students who are eligible for a stipend via their DTP/University/research council in order to undertake a three month professional internship. Students should check with their university that they are able to secure funding before applying. They will need to obtain the grant holder’s written permission to undertake the placement, outlining any funding arrangements, before a position can be offered.
All roles are based in Central London, with a mix of home and office working; students will be expected to base themselves within or near to London for the period of the placement.
