The UK Atomic Energy Authority researches fusion energy and related technologies with the aim of positioning the UK as a leader in sustainable nuclear energy. Harnessing fusion (the power source of the sun and stars) here on Earth promises abundant, safe and low carbon electricity for future generations.
UKAEA operates two major fusion experiments – the European JET facility and the UKs own MAST Upgrade experiment at its Culham Science Centre HQ in Oxfordshire. There is also a growing technology programme in areas vital in realising fusion power - such as robotics, materials science, tritium technology and component testing and validation at Culham and a new UKAEA centre in South Yorkshire.
