As part of BIG's role in promoting excellence in science communication we are pleased to announce our upcoming skills day - spaces are limited to 15 participants - so book early!
Magicians are masters at controlling people's expectations, attention, memory and emotional reaction. All necessary ingredients for making a lasting impact on your audience.
Aimed at professional STEM communicators and others working in public engagement, this 1-day course focuses on stagecraft skills specifically for those who regularly present science demonstrations to the public.
By deconstructing some of the techniques he uses on stage, accomplished master of sleight-of-hand, Neil Kelso will demonstrate how he creates a powerful audience experience. Participants will apply some of the same principles to science communication. turning a simple demonstration into a carefully crafted stage routine.
The course includes:
• Maximising the wonder felt by the audience
• Controlling attention (and perception/awareness)
• Exploiting unchecked assumptions
• Manipulating what is remembered
We will also discuss the ethical problems of intentionally creating illusion/deception and the need for honesty and integrity within science demonstration performance.
About the Trainer - Neil Kelso entertains audiences around the world with his unique humour and charm. From the biggest arenas to the most intimate gathering, he has worked with clients around the world to design bespoke illusions and magic to amuse, amaze and inspire.
