The Power of Cryogenic Science to Inspire
A training day of Liquid Nitrogen demonstrations
Thursday 4th May 2017, 10am - 4pm
Air Products Ltd, Basingstoke RG24 8FE
Air Products invites members of BIG STEM Communicators Network and ASDC to its R&D site in Basingstoke to explore demonstrations using Liquid Nitrogen.
The day is generously supported by Air Products Hosted at their site, delivered by their experts; lunch provided. The day is facilitated by Professor Neil Downie, Industrial Gases Group.
If you’ve never done demonstrations with liquid nitrogen, then here is a good place to start. And if you have worked with LIN before, you’ll want new ideas and information on safe handling and effective use.
What we’ll cover:
-
The more common demos - bubble monster, making liquid oxygen by condensing air, smashing rubber to pieces and Blutac nails;
-
Intellectual demos - superconductors, Leidenfrost Roundabout;
-
New demo ideas - cryogenic traffic lights, the Cheshire Cat, the ping-pong turbine.
We’ll use freezing gases like CO2 or SF6, pouring liquid nitrogen through your hat, and exploding balloons with boiling LIN. We will also cover demonstrations which show other things gases and compressed air can do, like our Molecular Weight Meter, acetylene cannons, and armour-piercing carrots.
Places are strictly limited and you will need to be a member of BIG or ASDC* to register.
* ASDC members who would like to attend but are not BIG members, please email Rachel Mason event@big.uk.com for registration details.
